TROY, TROIA

Troia in French,  Troy in English, Troya in Greek , Truva in Turkish and so many differnt saying in different languages can be found for this mythological settlement showing the great civilazition where is about  31 kms South West of Canakkale on the way to Izmir road Troia is located on the Asian shore of the Dardanelles where Skamander River  flows into the Aegean Sea.  The name Troy has been used 49 times and Illyada 109 times in the Homer’s epic which is noted for as Troy and Ilyada.

Due to its strategic location between European and Asian continents connecting the Aegean and the Black Sea trade routes, Troia has become an important commercial  center and the settlement for thousands of years and has grabbed so many attacks by different nations to capture the city so wars have made a great destructions so many times .

The history of Troia dates back to the the Bronze Age and begins with the legendary King Priam was known as Ilios or Ilion, fort and town were destroyed at the end of the Trojan War. The first excavations at Troy of Homer's Iliad, Henrich Schliemann, a wealthy  German amateur archaeologist based on the epic Troy in 1870, began digging out and unfortunately the treasure was found and later taken out illegally out of Turkey . The treasure of Troia has been appeared after a long peiod of time in the Pushkin Museum of Russia.
Troia has been established in the same place again and again after being collapsed, destroyed and sucked  which is very interesting and needs to be examined in terms of archeology and history. Generally, when a city destroyed, it is installed for another place but in Troia, it has been installed on the same place for nine times that gives us a chance to see nine different layers today. The layers represents  a rich variety of great civilisations dated between  3000 BC to 1200 AD, from a mythological Greek to Byzantine times, from Agamemnon and beautiful Helen, to Roman emperor and  hieros.

TROIA IN  GREEK MYTHOLOGY
In mythology, the hill on which the city was founded , is the place the goddess Athena thrown down from Olympus by Zeus. The founder of Troy named Ilios who is the son of Tros from descandant of Dardanos dynasty. Tros won a competition held by the King of Phrygiaand was given a black bull as a reward. When the bull stopped where he decided to build a city. For that reason the city was known as Troia because of its founder.

THE TROIA MUSEUM
Some findings from Troy , was opened in 1970, are displayed in the museum at the entrance which displays historical artifacts removed from this region venue.  There are 4 large exhibition halls worth visited before the archeological site. In fact, much more than those issued in this museum, but unfortunately, many works have been smuggled abroad, particularly in Germany and Russia, including the history and artifacts from Troy today that the number of countries reached 50.

TROJAN HORSE - LEGEND
Paris, son of king Priam, fell in love for Helen, a  beautiful wife of  Menelaus and misssed her to Troy with force. In response of this event, Menelaus  taking the allies declared war on Troy. The Trojans with their Anatolian alliens began defending Troy and the war took years and years. The soldiers in both sides were tired and bored. Odysseus, the famous hero of Greek troops, thought he would be  making a wooden horse is the ideal way with the armed troops hidden inside to capture Troy. A giant wooden horse was made and soldiers with waepons left in the city gate of Troy.

Trojans thought that the Greek forces have gone and they have opened the Gates and have began to celebrate their victory. At the night time, armed soldiers who were hidden in the wooden horse came out and took over the city from drunken Trojans in a short time. It has been a great legend and has been known as Trojan horse all over the world later.
