HZ MAWLANA CELALAEDDIN-I RUMI

Mawlana, the great sufi and the  inspring founder of Mawlavi religious order,  one the most well-known Moslem scholars in the world, a famous humane whom he has been inviting mankind to peace for centuries, , the light of the  enlightment  and a great philasopher of medieval ages,   is the great scholar identified with Konya city. It is impossible to  distinguish from each other, Konya means Mawlana and Mawlana means Konya. It is appreciable Mawlana’s impact on the people, in daily life, in cultural aspects and in all corners of Konya city. Mevlana affects not only the city's cultural situations  but also He marks in economic life even though he is 740 years old now so Konya has a big ecomomic, cultural, social and historical power because of Mawlana Celaleddin Rumi.

The Turkish visitors pay a visit to his mauseloum before going to Mecca in Saudi Arabia to complete as one of five pillars of Islam faith to become pilgrim, foreign guests come to Konya in order to understand his philosophy and anybody who hears  “ Come, come, whoever you are  come !, Heathen, fire worshipper or idolatrous come ! Come even if you broke your penitence a hundred times, ours is the port of hope, come as you are ! “ this invition makes the people come to his mauseloum to be forgiveness and to begin with a new life as if newborn.  Throughout the world there are  some important  faith centers and sacred places where the people usually visit to be in holy atmosphere and relax. Mawlana Mauseloum is one of those centers for the lovers of Rumi to  be with his spirit and to watch a great whirling derwishes ceremony repeated  each December on the anniversary of his death day called “ Sufi Wedding Night. “

HIS LIFE STORY
Mawlana Celaleddin was born on September 30th, 1207 in Balkh located within the borders of Afghanistan called Khorasan region today. Mawlana’s  father was Bahaeddin Veled famed as Sultan of the scholars and his mother was the daughter of Sultan Rukneddin of Balkh. Bahaeddin Veled was forced to leave  because of some political events and for the approach of Mongol invasion so he left  Balkh with his family in 1213 A.D. to emigrate. They have gone to Nishaphur, Baghdad first and then have moved to Kaaba in order to make thier pilgrimage in Mecca. They  had spent some time in Damascus after pilrimage and finallly they had arrived in Karaman. By the time when Mawlana’s family arrived in Karaman, A large part of Asia Minor  was under the rule of the Seljuk Empire and Konya was the capital which was adorned with works of art, madrasahs, palaces as well as with the scholars, scientists and artists of Moslem world. The Sultan was Alaeddin Kaykubat and it was the golden age of the empire in all points so sultan Alaeddin Kaykubat invited Mawlana’s father from Karaman to Konya to be settled down . Bahaddin Veled accepted the invitation of sultan and the family  was settled down in Konya in 1228.
The sultan met the family with a big ceremony and one of the great madrasahs was allocated to Mawlana’s family as the accommodation place. Bahaddin Veled, Mawlana’s father, passed away in 1231 A.D. and he was buried in the rose garden of Seljuk Palace which is noted for as Green Dome or Mawlana Museum today. After Bahaedddin Veled, all his students, assistants, fans and close freinds  gathered around Mawlana to accept him  as the heir instead of his father. At that time Mawlana became a great scholar and a young teacher famed known as “Rumi. “ and he was teaching the Islamic principles to the big crowd of  inhabitants of Konya everyday. The madrasah where he was making speeches used to be full of his lovers due to his  big fame.

The most important period of Rumi's life is encounter with Shams Tabrizi on November 15 th, 1244 in the bazaar of Konya. Rumi had seen "the existence of absolute perfection" and "light of God" in Shams.  However, the friendship and being together  did not last long, first Shams was forced to leave from Konya, Mawlana cried and waited him  for weeks & months, Shams was back later but finaly he was murdered from a group of his lovers under the leadership of his son, Alaeddin. After the death of Shams, Rumi went into seclusion for many years in pain. In later years, Saladin Zerkub and Hüsameddin Chalabi  tried to fill the place of the Shams-i Tabrizi in the rest ofhis  life.  “ I was raw, I was cooked and I was burnt “ these are the outlining words of Rumi so he passed away on December 17the 1273 in Konya that is celebrated as the wedding night of Sufi lovers today. His funeral was so crowded that not only Moslems but also Christians and Jews, even non-belivers attended the funeral ceremony.

SOME OF HIS FAMOUS WORDS
- Outline of his life : I was raw, I was cooked and I was burnt

- The path of knowing yourself : Everthing in unverse is within you. Ask from yourself.

- Never afraid to try again and again : If you are irritated by every rub, how will you  be polished ?

- The  well known invitation to all human being  without any discrimination
Come, come, whoever you are  come !, Heathen, fire worshipper or idolatrous come !
Come even if you broke your penitence a hundred times, ours is the port of hope,
come as you are.

- Rumi’s will to his lovers and followers centuries after his death
Do not try to find my grave on the earth, mine is in the hearts of wise people.

MAWLAVI RELIGIOUS ORDER
Rumi used to say poems, to chant, to dance  and to hold religious conversations  in private meetings with his close friends while he was alive.  As the time went by, these meeting  became a  ceremonial must with certain rules, ideas and views. The ceremonies  at which nay, small drums and other musical  instruments  were used and then they  began  more tidy and sober. After the death of Mevlana, his son Sultan Walad made these ritual ceremonies, sema dancing, chanting and musical performance as the main items of Mawlavi order with certain rules. He also expanded the meeting hall and madrasah where Mawlana taught so the place was called as the main lodge of Mawlavi sect. In the beginning these ceremonies were held only in Konya but later Mawlawi lodges  and dancing halls were established depending on Konya  as the head quarter with permission not only throughout Anatolia, but also in Balcan countries, Iran, Iraq and Syria.

One of the largest religious orders in Sunni sect of Islam called Mawlavi is  based on the idea of the unity of Allah in universe.  According to Sufis, Allah is visible in the universe in which He created and to be in the universe is the appearence of Allah. Actual existence is Allah, everything comes from Him and it will eventually return to Him again. Allah  encompasses the universe in integrity and has no other god but Allah. The only thing which it takes human to Allah is love not mind so the human tries to reach to Allah with love. Sema, is the path to reach to Allah with turning around Him. The Whirling derwishes turn around Allah describing the earth & universe with tombtones on their heads and wear grave clothes in white as soon as they hear the sufi music. Their rights hands are open to sky to take something from Allah and their left hands are open towards to the earth in order to transmit  the things to human being from which they have taken. In Mawlavi sect, If you love human, you love Allah because there is some core piece given to human by Allah as soon as they are created by Him. Human being is the only most valuable creature than others so human is equipped with divine properties and one of them is fine arts such as music. Mawlavi order is the first İslamic sect that combines worship with music. That is why musical ceremonies with dance called Sema is the core of the Mawlavi sect.
